Boys' U13 v Holmwood House

2nd A v Holmwood House A
Won 2-1  Goals by Harry N
In a closely contested first half, Felsted played some excellent team hockey and importantly gave Holmwood House little time to settle. Once again Cameron C provided some impressive crosses from the right wing, one of which was put away by Harry N. An early goal in the second half from the same combination should have settled the nerves, but Holmwood House scored with 10 minutes to go making an exciting finish. Felsted hung on for their 3rd straight win of the season.

2nd B v Holmwood House B
Won 5-0
After a slightly untidy first half, Felsted led by 2 -0 with goals from Joe H and Harry D. The team kept their positions better in the second half and dominated the play. Further goals from Hamish U and another two from Joe H secured a deserved 5 - 0 victory. The 2 B team remain unbeaten with 3 wins from 3 matches.

5th A VII v Holmwood House
This was a much better performance from the A team. They played with structure and had some really good passages of play, showing some good passing and ball control. They were particularly good in the opening part of each half when they managed to score their goals. However, lapses in concentration in terms of defending meant that Tom B in goal needed to be on form to save us on a number of occasions. Still, a good result.

5th B VII v Holmwood House
A much more solid performance from the B team. They played well and one or two of the boys particularly showed some great stick work, working their way through the opposition defence. We took our chances and scored some well worked goals. However, we still need to work on our dynamism, positional play and defence.

U13 v The Perse

1st A Won 5 - 0
The Perse began with some excellent passing round the back and keeping possession and made a couple of breaks, but these were very quickly shut down by our defenders Jonathan B and Thomas H. Gradually as the game developed Felsted pushed up and pressured The Perse into mistakes and counter attacked with skill and some efficient passing.

Felsted 2 - 0 at half time. Felsted then began to dominate the game from the midfield winning 5 - 0. Goals by Hitchcock 2, Sam 1, Oliver 1, Jonathan H 1. A good performance. Matthew, goalkeeper, was put under some pressure as our defence had wandered forward but performed confidently.

1st B  Won 5 - 3
It was already cold when this game began but to add to their challenges it began to snow and sleet. Not pleasant. The team managed to win 5 - 3 with goals from William B 3, Christian L 1, and Hamish R 1. Some great attacking play but they allowed The Perse to creep round the back of the defence and midfield to score their goals.

2nd A  Won 3 - 1
After having most of the early play and creating several chances, Felsted fell behind after failing to clear the ball from their own D. However, the early set back spurred the team on and after some excellent play between Cameron C and Jem S, it was Jem who sweetly slotted the ball home. At half time 1-1. Cameron C continued to impress with his direct running and covering of just about everyone on the pitch. So it was fitting as his goal almost burst the back of the net as it whistled past a helpless keeper. Alex M worked tirelessly up front and created chances for the others as he pulled defenders out of position. Late on in the game he got his reward as he walked the ball around the keeper before slotting it home. There will be some interesting selection problems when the off X and X country runners return for the next match.

2nd B Won 8 - 0
Felsted dominated much of the early play in this game but missed many chances through being over eager. Their only reward was a single goal scored by Alex Martine.
Some positional changes and a few words appeared to settle things down as Felsted players held their positions and played far more cohesively as a team. Goals came from Harry D, Toby G, Alex M, Owen T 2, and Max C 2.

3rd A VII Won 4-3
Despite the appalling weather conditions the hockey and the spirit shown by both teams were enough to bring a little warmth to the afternoon. Fortunately we were playing a fair opposition and thus we could measure ourselves properly in hockey terms. The 3rd A team started well scoring a crisp goal to take the lead and all looked promising.

Then we forgot to defend and by half time were 1 – 3 down. A rousing half time discussion saw us reinvigorated for the second half and in a brilliant last 7 minute spell we scored 3 unanswered goals to win 4 – 3. All involved showed a determination and willingness to work hard for each other and in the end it was a deserved victory.

3rd B Won 6 -1

Then the 3rd B team strode out onto the wet and windy astro and produced an all-round excellent performance full of energy, ambition and, dare I say it, composure! The 6 – 1 score line was a fair reflection of the difference between the teams and everyone played their part to the full. We defended well and attacked intelligently and the all-round work rate was brilliant. Well done to Alex and Joe as winning captains but well done to Xavier, Archie, Freddie, Edward, Robert, Thomas, Tom, Elliott, Max, George and Jonathan for bringing a little sunshine to an otherwise wet and wintry afternoon.

4th A Won 5-1
Wednesday 7th February the 4th A team had a good start to the season with a 5-1 win over The Perse. The goals came from George T -3 Samuel B-1 and a deflected shot which came from Peter H to deflect off their defence to secure the victory.

4th B Won 5-1
The B team put the pressure on immediately and managed to control the game. The defence of Aspen D-B and Gregoire I were solid at the back with William B as Goalkeeper touching the ball a few times only. The team played quite well with Joe Wahl scoring 3, Peter H 1, and Brock H 1. Winning 5 -1. A good result.

5th A Lost 0-2
This was one of the most frustrating matches I think I have ever watched. The A team are made up of boys who were fast and keen, despite their talents being a little 'raw' at the moment. This showed on the pitch as we dominated throughout the match. The opposition were very rarely in our D. We must have had at least twenty shots at goal, however the ball just refused to go in the net. The opposition had two shots and scored both times. Unfair in some ways, but a lesson learned that we need to convert the opportunities we are given. The boys played well in good spirit in terrible conditions. Shooting practice is on the cards after Half Term I think.

5th B Lost 1-3

This was a far more steady affair than the A team match with a team that had more experience rather than raw talent. The boys had been watching the A team match and were a little stiff to begin with. The conditions did not lend themselves to a real running game of hockey with howling winds and driving rain. We went down 0-2 at the end of the first half, mainly because the boys had not started to move really. However, the sun came out in the second half which roused our team. The opposition scored again despite some great goal keeping. However, we managed a consolation goal towards the end of the game which was the goal  of the day. 1-3 was the end result, although that did not tell the story of the match as things were far more even in reality. The boys will need to start to
game with more energy next time.

6th A  Lost 1 – 2

On a cold and wet afternoon the 6th A and 6 B  sides played one of their opening fixtures against The Perse School. For most of the boys this was their first game of the season and from the start it was evident that the effort from the teams wasn't lacking. As the 'A' game progressed the team started to gel and the boys were passing the ball nicely and creating quite a few opportunities. It was only a matter of time until Felsted scored their first goal, through Will P, after the pressure finally paid off. The second half started with The Perse on the attack and after much solid defending by Felsted a momentary bit of confusion helped The Perse pull level when a ball was hit from the edge of the 'D' and let through on goal. The team pushed hard for the winner although a sudden break by The Perse left Felsted scrambling back and a three on one situation ensued to which The Perse took the lead.
The team kept fighting to pull one back however it was too little too late and the final score was Felsted 1 The Perse 2.

6th B Drew 1 - 1
The B side started out in a similar way to the A side by displaying lots of effort early on. The team were passing the ball effectively however soon The Perse were starting to get on top of the match. Lots of pressure was dealt with well by the team although eventually The Perse forced an opening and scored the first goal of the game. The team didn't stop working and trying to get something going but nothing was going their way in the first half. The second half started with both sides sharing the possession although the team didn't stop working knowing that they were only a goal down. In the final minutes of the game some strong defending by Felsted followed by slick passing led to an attacking chance and after the first shot was saved Felsted snatched a late equalizer thanks to George H. The final score was Felsted 1 The Perse 1.

Boys' U11 vs Howe Green

Under 11 C v Howe Green A  Lost 0-1
The C team played really well against a strong Howe Green team, who beat our B team in the Felsted U11 tournament. With the addition of a sweeper to our defence, we defended strongly and then began to mount some dangerous counter-attacks. The flow of play swung Howe Green's way in the second half, which led to their goal. The boys didn't give up though, and put a lot of pressure on Howe Green in the dying minutes, narrowly failing to score. Well played to all, and especially our super goalie Joseph!

Boys' U13 v Orwell Park

1st A Won 6 - 4
The Orwell Park Coach said it was "A top quality match and very exciting."
We played some great hockey leaving their defence devastated in the end.

1st B Won 6 - 1
Felsted dominated the game. Final score 6 - 1. Goals by Jonny H (2), Hamish R (2), William B  (1), Thomas W (1). Felsted played as a team and all worked hard for each other.

Felsted U11 Girls' and Boys' Hockey Tournament

On Friday 1st February Felsted welcomed ten schools from across the region to take part in the Annual U11 Hockey Tournament. Heads of Senior School Hockey, Loren Sherer and Nick Phillips, engaged teams in a warm-up and skills session before lunch in readiness for the tournament, which was well received by the children involved.

The boys' tournament took on a round-robin format whilst the girls' side of the event had two pools with semi-finals and a final. The standout team in the boys’ tournament was FKS, who comfortably won six matches and drawing the other. Felsted Preparatory School then beat Barnadiston Hall into second place by the virtue of goal difference.

In the girls' side of the competition both pools were very tight and after two hard fought semi-finals the final was played between the two most consistent teams of the day, Felsted Preparatory School and Kingshott. After a tight opening period Felsted Preparatory School scored two quick goals to settle the match and end the day victorious. St Margaret's School won the third vs fourth play-off to finish in bronze medal position.

The standard of hockey throughout the day was impressive and it bodes well for hockey in this region, seeing so many young pupils enjoying the game and playing with such a high skill level. Felsted now looks forward to welcoming the U9 Tournament later in the term.

U13 Girls' and Boys' Hockey Teams are Crowned Essex Champions!

Both the U13 Girls' and Boys' have both won the Essex Mini Hockey Tournament, held at Redbridge on Tueday 5th February. They have both now been crowned Essex Champions after a fantastic performance!

Boys' U13
A very cold day which began sunny but gradually got colder and colder. The team played some very good hockey and controlled most of the play in the matches, but then found it difficult to adjust to a stronger side at the end.

Felsted v Forest School: Won 3 – 0
Felsted v Helena Romanes: Won 7 – 0
Felsted v Emmerson School: Won 5 – 0

We then had a tough game against Chigwell, we could not get things right. An awkward time, but the side worked hard to overcome the problems winning 1 – 0 . Bancroft B then paid the price as the Felsted side put some good passing moments and spread out, using the width of the pitch. Won 5 – 0.

We were top of our group, so the team moved into the semi-final against 2nd in the other group Holmwood House, Won 6 – 0. The team played some exciting hockey and passing moves.

In the Final against Bancroft it could not have been more exciting. We did not play well, but were good in phases and the opposition were quite strong and determined. We went 1 – 0 up through a goal by Hitchcock, but then thought this would be ok. Bancroft responded quickly, 1 - 1. We then managed to get control again and went 2 – 1 up through Barnaby and again Bancroft drew 2 - 2 at the very end.

Penalty Flicks
Three flicks: Felsted first missed and scored the next two, Bancroft scored two but Matthew saved the third, very tense. More to come!

Sudden Death Penalties
Bancroft started and scored. Felsted shot and the goal was saved BUT the goalie had moved early so a retake and we scored. Next Bancroft but Matthew saved and we scored. Essex Champions!! Congratulations to the team for a very big effort. Now on to the East.

The U13 Girls' won their section beating;
Alec Hunter 7-0
Holmwood House 7-2
Bancrofts B 6-0
Coopers Coburn 4-0
New Hall 5-0 in the semi finals.

The three finalists then played each other and we beat Holmwood House again 5-0 and Bancrofts A 1-0. The girls had played brilliantly, until the last game when pressure and tiredness set in. Although they had most of the play, it wasn't until the last few minutes that the winning goal went in.

A spectacular performance from the girls, who only conceeded two goals all day, whilst scoring 35!!

U13 & U11 v St John College School Cambridge

U13 3rd A VII v St John's College 1st VII Lost 2 - 7
To ask the two 3rd teams to compete against St John's College's 1st and 2nd teams was always a tall order and big task but the boys played really well and did themselves proud.

The A side were 0 - 5 at half time with a very strong opposition player having scored all 5 goals. In the second half we got to grips with the pace of the game and ended the half at a highly respectable 2 - 2 with goals from Robert H and Thomas J. Everyone played well and real potential was shown and they should look forward to their next match against a proper opposition with confidence. Xavier C was outstanding in goal but everyone fulfilled their role extremely well.

U13 3rd VII v St John's College 2nd VII Lost 1 - 3
The B side also did really well, holding the 2nd VII opposition to 1 - 1 until the last 5 minutes. Alex M scored a terrific goal from a short corner and we played some great hockey but were eventually outclassed by a better side. Again though there were real positives to take from the game and I look forward to them playing against a fair opposition.

6th A VII v St John's  Lost 1-2
This is a very raw team as many of the boys are Yr 7 who have never played hockey before. However, it was a real display of grit, determination and pure energy as most boys did not stop running for 40 minutes. We were playing their 3rd VII which meant that they had quite a few strong players. Although we had our chances, we were unable to convert a number of them. That said, our goalkeeper kept us in the game. The boys went down 2-1 despite their most valiant efforts.

6th B VII v St John's Lost 1-5
This was against their 4th VII and was quite evenly matched in terms of skill. However it was not in terms of luck. The boys lost 5-1 despite probably having more shots on goal than the opposition, the ball just didn't seem to want to go in the net. There were a number of 'oohh's and 'aaahhh's from the sideline. A good team effort from the boys and an encouraging start to the season in places, but we need to do some shooting practice it would seem.

U11 B v St. John's A team.  Lost 4-0
A spirited performance from the boys playing against a stronger team. The passing was a little weak at times and a bit too direct, allowing the St John's player an easy intercept, which they utilised too many times. On a positive note the second half was not as one sided. We competed for the ball with greater intensity and created a few chances in front of goal. Things to work on!

U11 E team v St Johns College B team Lost 0 – 2

U11 G team v St. John's College C team Lost 0 - 4

A difficult first fixture against a stronger set of boys resulted in a 4-0 loss. However, Mr Manson was extremely pleased with all the boys who played. The score was only 1-0 at half-time as a result of some committed defensive work from young Henry B and Elliott S especially and great saves and clearances from goalkeeper Cameron W. St John's stepped up a gear in the second half and their experience told in the end as they scored 3 more before time up. Well done boys - you never gave up.

Boys' U11 v Orwell Park

U11 A v Orwell Park. Drew 2-2
We made a somewhat shaky and nervous start, allowing our opponents to dictate the passage of play and exposing our defence, scoring an early goal. As the first half progressed we started to put together some passes and created some chances in front of goal. The second half was tight and well contested with both teams showing some good flowing hockey. We drew level with a crisp shot from Oliver B but again some lack defensive work allowed Orwell to go ahead. With some skilful movement and good tackling we took possession of the ball, worked it into the opposition circle and managed to move the goal keeper to allow Rory A to score, levelling the game near the end. Some work to do on organisation and movement, however a steady start.

U11 C team v Orwell Park C: Drew 2-2
A close match, in which we edged ahead in terms of pressure, and a goal scored by Samuel W to go 1-0 up at half time. More pressure led to a second goal from a determined Thomas Gilbert, but then defensive lapses let Orwell Park in to score two goals in the last quarter, to draw the match.

U11 D team v Orwell Park D: Won 5-0
Good, determined play and speedy breaks led to goals from Ethan W (3), Sebastian M-M and Oscar M. Well played boys!

Boys' U13 A v Blue Hornets Hockey Club

On Saturday 12th January, the U13 1st XI hockey team played the Blue Hornets Hockey Club. This was a practice match in preparation for the tour to Guernsey. Several Felsted players were playing for Blue Hornets which gave an opportunity for other players to show their skills. It was a good game in which everyone played with enthusiasm and skill. The defence held, with some good goalkeeping by Robbie and then Matthew. Harry and Jonathan were solid at the back and Harry S, Christian and Jed played well defending the wings. In midfield, Felsted closed Barnaby and Hamish down which created lots of moves setting up Thomas to attack to the right. Luke and Sam played a tactical game on the left and right creating attacking chances for Will, Joe and Harry N.

We won 2 – 1, Goal scorers were: Thomas W and Will B.
