1st A Won 5 - 0
The Perse began with some excellent passing round the back and keeping possession and made a couple of breaks, but these were very quickly shut down by our defenders Jonathan B and Thomas H. Gradually as the game developed Felsted pushed up and pressured The Perse into mistakes and counter attacked with skill and some efficient passing.
Felsted 2 - 0 at half time. Felsted then began to dominate the game from the midfield winning 5 - 0. Goals by Hitchcock 2, Sam 1, Oliver 1, Jonathan H 1. A good performance. Matthew, goalkeeper, was put under some pressure as our defence had wandered forward but performed confidently.
1st B Won 5 - 3
It was already cold when this game began but to add to their challenges it began to snow and sleet. Not pleasant. The team managed to win 5 - 3 with goals from William B 3, Christian L 1, and Hamish R 1. Some great attacking play but they allowed The Perse to creep round the back of the defence and midfield to score their goals.
2nd A Won 3 - 1
After having most of the early play and creating several chances, Felsted fell behind after failing to clear the ball from their own D. However, the early set back spurred the team on and after some excellent play between Cameron C and Jem S, it was Jem who sweetly slotted the ball home. At half time 1-1. Cameron C continued to impress with his direct running and covering of just about everyone on the pitch. So it was fitting as his goal almost burst the back of the net as it whistled past a helpless keeper. Alex M worked tirelessly up front and created chances for the others as he pulled defenders out of position. Late on in the game he got his reward as he walked the ball around the keeper before slotting it home. There will be some interesting selection problems when the off X and X country runners return for the next match.
2nd B Won 8 - 0
Felsted dominated much of the early play in this game but missed many chances through being over eager. Their only reward was a single goal scored by Alex Martine.
Some positional changes and a few words appeared to settle things down as Felsted players held their positions and played far more cohesively as a team. Goals came from Harry D, Toby G, Alex M, Owen T 2, and Max C 2.
3rd A VII Won 4-3
Despite the appalling weather conditions the hockey and the spirit shown by both teams were enough to bring a little warmth to the afternoon. Fortunately we were playing a fair opposition and thus we could measure ourselves properly in hockey terms. The 3rd A team started well scoring a crisp goal to take the lead and all looked promising.
Then we forgot to defend and by half time were 1 – 3 down. A rousing half time discussion saw us reinvigorated for the second half and in a brilliant last 7 minute spell we scored 3 unanswered goals to win 4 – 3. All involved showed a determination and willingness to work hard for each other and in the end it was a deserved victory.
3rd B Won 6 -1
Then the 3rd B team strode out onto the wet and windy astro and produced an all-round excellent performance full of energy, ambition and, dare I say it, composure! The 6 – 1 score line was a fair reflection of the difference between the teams and everyone played their part to the full. We defended well and attacked intelligently and the all-round work rate was brilliant. Well done to Alex and Joe as winning captains but well done to Xavier, Archie, Freddie, Edward, Robert, Thomas, Tom, Elliott, Max, George and Jonathan for bringing a little sunshine to an otherwise wet and wintry afternoon.
4th A Won 5-1
Wednesday 7th February the 4th A team had a good start to the season with a 5-1 win over The Perse. The goals came from George T -3 Samuel B-1 and a deflected shot which came from Peter H to deflect off their defence to secure the victory.
4th B Won 5-1
The B team put the pressure on immediately and managed to control the game. The defence of Aspen D-B and Gregoire I were solid at the back with William B as Goalkeeper touching the ball a few times only. The team played quite well with Joe Wahl scoring 3, Peter H 1, and Brock H 1. Winning 5 -1. A good result.
5th A Lost 0-2
This was one of the most frustrating matches I think I have ever watched. The A team are made up of boys who were fast and keen, despite their talents being a little 'raw' at the moment. This showed on the pitch as we dominated throughout the match. The opposition were very rarely in our D. We must have had at least twenty shots at goal, however the ball just refused to go in the net. The opposition had two shots and scored both times. Unfair in some ways, but a lesson learned that we need to convert the opportunities we are given. The boys played well in good spirit in terrible conditions. Shooting practice is on the cards after Half Term I think.
5th B Lost 1-3
This was a far more steady affair than the A team match with a team that had more experience rather than raw talent. The boys had been watching the A team match and were a little stiff to begin with. The conditions did not lend themselves to a real running game of hockey with howling winds and driving rain. We went down 0-2 at the end of the first half, mainly because the boys had not started to move really. However, the sun came out in the second half which roused our team. The opposition scored again despite some great goal keeping. However, we managed a consolation goal towards the end of the game which was the goal of the day. 1-3 was the end result, although that did not tell the story of the match as things were far more even in reality. The boys will need to start to
game with more energy next time.
6th A Lost 1 – 2
On a cold and wet afternoon the 6th A and 6 B sides played one of their opening fixtures against The Perse School. For most of the boys this was their first game of the season and from the start it was evident that the effort from the teams wasn't lacking. As the 'A' game progressed the team started to gel and the boys were passing the ball nicely and creating quite a few opportunities. It was only a matter of time until Felsted scored their first goal, through Will P, after the pressure finally paid off. The second half started with The Perse on the attack and after much solid defending by Felsted a momentary bit of confusion helped The Perse pull level when a ball was hit from the edge of the 'D' and let through on goal. The team pushed hard for the winner although a sudden break by The Perse left Felsted scrambling back and a three on one situation ensued to which The Perse took the lead.
The team kept fighting to pull one back however it was too little too late and the final score was Felsted 1 The Perse 2.
6th B Drew 1 - 1
The B side started out in a similar way to the A side by displaying lots of effort early on. The team were passing the ball effectively however soon The Perse were starting to get on top of the match. Lots of pressure was dealt with well by the team although eventually The Perse forced an opening and scored the first goal of the game. The team didn't stop working and trying to get something going but nothing was going their way in the first half. The second half started with both sides sharing the possession although the team didn't stop working knowing that they were only a goal down. In the final minutes of the game some strong defending by Felsted followed by slick passing led to an attacking chance and after the first shot was saved Felsted snatched a late equalizer thanks to George H. The final score was Felsted 1 The Perse 1.
